Lisa Flax (owner and instructor) brings a life long love of movement and teaching to her Pilates classes.
As a child, it was the norm to find Lisa an active participant in sports and ballet. Then, as a pre-teen, she was diagnosed with scoliosis (a curvature of the spine). This set Lisa on the path to explore ways to keep her flexibility and alignment functional and healthy. Although she dabbled in Pilates off and on through the years, it wasn’t until she retired from her career as a public school teacher that Pilates found it’s way into the day-to-day routine of her life. Lisa became an avid Pilates student and with regular class attendance, she found her ability to manage the long-standing musculoskeletal challenges of having a spinal scoliosis improved.
It was only a matter of time before she decided to pursue Pilates at a deeper level and add a new chapter to her 34 years of teaching expertise. Lisa earned both her mat and equipment Pilates teaching certificates (425 hours) through Movement Insights with Collette Stewart. She has been teaching Pilates in the Madison area since 2015. In addition to owning Flax Core Pilates, Lisa also teaches at Pilates on Harrison and Mound St Yoga Center in Madison.
Lisa uses imagery, fundamental exercises, and Pilates accessories to bring a deeper understanding to both the Beginning-Intermediate Classic Mat Series exercises and the Equipment work. Her ability to observe individual student needs, model and share the exercises, and clearly explain how the exercises apply to proper alignment and breath patterns are valued by her students. Lisa’s classes guide students to a clearer understanding of their unique movement patterns and how those patterns can be shaped to promote a healthy functional life of movement.
Lisa continues to enjoy canoeing, gardening, cooking, volunteering, reading, sewing, traveling, and time spent with her family — all with the increased ability to move with grace and ease.
